Operation Save Our Summer
Operation:
Save Our Summer broke records for children receiving swimsuits
and swim lessons this summer. After three years of continual
growth of swimsuit donations, up from 200 in 2007 to 2,800 this
year, the Parks Foundation volunteers were able to increase our
focus on swim lessons. We are normally able to fund 40 45 swim
lesson scholarships. This summer 217 children received in swim
lessons, including 77 that were part of a Swim Lesson Pilot
Project grant award from the Parks Foundation this spring.
Partnerships in the community have made an enormous difference in
our outreach ability. Both Boys and Girls Clubs, the Salvation
Army, Spokane Valley Partners and the youth centers throughout
Spokane all helped to identify children in need plus they
distributed the suits.
A
swimsuit may seem like a simple gift. But for a child attending a
community youth program, if he or she does not have a suit, they
cannot go on the weekly trips to the pool or lake. Becoming aware
of that was a great motivator for the Park Foundation volunteers
because they believe every child deserves great summer memories.
Volunteer Jocelyn Whitfield Babcock wrote numerous grants,
receiving over $15,000 in grant awards for swimsuits, including
funds to buy suits for next year at wholesale clearance prices in
January. Dolfin increased their donation from 800 to 927 swimsuits
and Speedo increased their donation to 500 swimsuits, up from an
initial 100 suits. Both manufacturers sent a wide variety of
sizes, so no child would be left out. Donations from individuals
provided the funding necessary to provide the remaining number of
suits and were directly responsible for increasing the number of
swim lessons provided.
If
you would like to donate today, thank you so much for childhood
summer memories you will be creating! Call the Spokane Parks
Foundation at (509) 326-5233 or

Summer Fun at the Boys & Girls Club
The Boys & Girls Club of Spokane County has a summer
tradition called "Water Wednesdays" where kids bring bathing
suits, water balloons, water guns or anything else water
fight related with them to the Club. Many kids participate
in this tradition, but last summer more and more kids were
not participating in this much loved tradition. When asked
why they weren't participating, a common answer was "My
parents do not have the money to buy bathing suits." There
were even kids who participated in their everyday clothing
such as jeans, t-shirts, socks and shoes. Those kids had the
same response: their parents could not afford bathing suits
and they had outgrown the bathing suits from the previous
year.
Hearing that these kids were not able to participate in the
Water Wednesday tradition absolutely broke the heart of
Alise Mnati, Operations Director of Boys & Girls Club of
Spokane County. I was not sure how to respond, because I
myself could not afford to buy over 100 swimming suits. When
the Spokane Parks Foundation donated swimsuits for the kids,
I was so thrilled. There are no words to explain the feeling
of seeing the appreciation on those children's faces. Those
kids were given a chance to enjoy the simple tradition that
so many other children took for granted. Not only that,
parents constantly thanked us for being able to provide an
item for their child that they were unable to afford, says
Mnati.
The teens at the Club benefited from the swimming passes
donated by Make A Splash, under the umbrella of the Spokane
Parks Foundation. Although most of the teens come to the
Club on a day-to-day basis during the summer, there are
times when they want to be just teens, with freedom outside
of the club. Having the swim passes allows both their
freedom and a safe environment, giving them the option of
making good choices and staying out of trouble. One teen
actually told Mnati "There were times when I thought about
going to hang out with friends who smoke, but I decided not
to because I had free swimming passes."
I, as a staff, am forever grateful for the donation of
swimsuits and swimming passes. It is people like you that
truly makes a difference in the world! Thank you for all
that you do and realize that you are directly empowering the
youth of tomorrow to become caring, productive and
responsible citizens.

Spokane Parks Go to the Dogs!
High Bridge Dog Park Update
SpokAnimal had
a great turn out for the two Dog Park Etiquette classes on
beautiful spring days in April and May! SpokAnimal
volunteers and Diamonds in the Ruff trainers gathered at the
park to welcome dogs and their people and walked them
through important safety and etiquette lessons. The new How
Do We Make Sure Our Dogs Are Safe at the Dog Park? class
focused on dog behaviors and recognizing when play can
become dangerous.
Carol Byrnes,
SpokAnimals Education Director and Diamonds in the Rough
owner, met with Spokane Parks Foundation's Toni Nersesian
and Suzanne Schreiner, along with their dogs Dana and Flora,
to give a private etiquette lesson. They also discussed
future plans for the park, including additional signage,
planting shade trees for the small dog park, and building
trails on the hillside to alleviate erosion and make the
outer reaches of the park accessible. The hottest topic is
adding much needed running water maybe even a water
feature for the dogs to splash around in! Your donations are
still needed to make these things happen!
SpokAnimal
Executive Director Gail Mackie summed it up by saying
"Without the support and initial funding from the Spokane
Parks Foundation, we wouldn't have the SpokAnimal Dog Park @
Highbridge. Toni and her team were instrumental in walking
us through phase one and held our hands until it was done.
The support didnt end there however. We have partnered on
projects with other parks and programs which are mutually
beneficial to the Spokane Parks Department, the public and
our own SpokAnimal Dog Park @ Highbridge. Thanks for all you
have done for the pet owners of Spokane.

Doggie Dips a Success
The smell of
wet dog was in the air and a howling great time was had at
the second annual Doggy Dips on August 28th and 29th. After
closing for people swimming this summer, Comstock and
Hillyard pools opened for dogs to enjoy the pools. What fun
they had! Approximately 180 dogs of all shapes, sizes and
colors attended the festivities. Every dog in attendance got
a bath and a swim.
Suggested donations of $10 per dog raised over $2,000 for
the Dog Park @ High Bridge. This is a good start to the
$7,000 needed to get running water at the Dog Park.
SpokAnimal would like to thank the Spokane Parks Department,
the City of Spokane, the Spokane Parks Foundation, Prairie
Dog Mercantile and the life guards at Comstock and Hillyard
pools for making the Doggy Dips a success! A very special
thanks goes to River Bank for their generosity in sponsoring
this years event.
If you would
like to donate to the improvements of the Dog Park @ High
Bridge you can mail a check marked Dog Park to the Spokane
Parks Foundation or
online. You can also go to SpokAnimals Dog Park at High
Bridge page on Facebook to check out all the pictures from
the event.

Thanks for the Signs About Leashing Dogs
A "High Five" in the Spokesman-Review Voice, November 10,
2011
I want to
thank the Spokane Park Foundation and especially Tony
Madunich with the Spokane Parks Department for installing
some wonderful signs reminding dog owners about leashing
their dogs on the bluff below High Drive.
The dog doo ladies are doing a great job of picking up the
bags of doo. People are seeing and listening to the signs.
We all need to help maintain safe and clean trails for the
enjoyment of everyone. It appears this is happening.

Swimming, Sun, and Fun
Make A Splash Makes a Difference
The sound of children playing and laughing brought amusement
and joy to anyone who passed by a pool this summer in
Spokane County. Because of the generosity of citizens and
businesses, Make A Splash was able to raise over $50,000
this year so that area children were able to swim.
It is a combination of people and organizations that made
this happen. The generosity began with area businesses like
Group Health, Numerica, Northwest Orthopedics, and a very
generous anonymous donor. Local media like Q6 further aided
fundraising with commercials and news coverage. This enabled
us to reach out to the public who gave money in droves.
Partnerships with Spokane Valley Partners, Spokane Parks
Foundation, The Salvation Army, and Spokane County made sure
that the passes were ready and handed out when needed. In
all, over 1200 children were able to swim this year because
of the generosity of others. Many thanks to all of those who
gave, volunteered, and partnered with Make A Splash to make
2011 such a success.
In 2012, Make A Splash will be working hard to get even more
children in the pools. We will be branching out in different
areas and partnering up again with various organizations and
businesses. We want to thank all of the donors who made it
possible for area children to go swimming and we hope to
triple the number of children served in 2012.
If you would like to make a donation please visit the

Swim Lessons Score
In a
region filled with pools and lakes, many children from low income families
do not know how to swim. Brenda Corbett knew that a grant from the Parks
Foundation could change that reality.
Corbett applied for, and received funding for a Swim Lesson Pilot Project
grant and changed the lives of 77 children this summer. The pilot project
grant award funded two week swim lesson sessions at AM Cannon Aquatic
Center. Corbett recruited Kristina Zuara, an intern from Gonzaga
University and the project took off like a rocket. Families quickly
registered their children at the West Central Community Center, filling
all the swim lesson spots within a week.
An award presentation celebration was held at the end of the session and
the parents all expressed their thanks and appreciation. Having these
lessons made it happen for my child to learn how to swim, which would not
have been possible otherwise said one. Another parent told Corbett This
was a very good program. She wouldnt be in swim lessons without it. She
is no longer afraid of the water and learned SO much!
The grant report noted This program not only increased the swimming
ability of the children but it gives positive memories and experiences to
the families that are not able to afford swim lessons so other summer
activities, as it creates a healthier and more active lifestyles. The
families make a welcome addition to Cannon Park and the level of providing
a safer park environment.
The Spokane Park Foundation Grant Program is funded by donations from
people like you. To all our 2010 donors, thank you for making this
possible. If you want donate to the Spokane Parks Foundation

An Update on Moose Park
Thank you to
all who helped support Moose Park (Gleneden Park) this season! Thanks to
our volunteer efforts, the field was green and mowed each week. The trash
was also emptied on a weekly basis, so we were able to keep our park
clean. The county reported to me that there was significantly less
vandalism at the park this year since it was being taken care of by the
community. All in all, it was a huge success! Moose Park was open all
season for many families and kids to enjoy.
As we enter the winter season, we are looking to apply some winterizing
fertilizer to help the grass survive and come back even better next year.
Due to generous contributions from neighboring communities, we still have
enough money left in our fund to cover that expense. We are also hoping to
start early next spring with fertilizer, weed and feed, and possibly more
grass seed if it is needed in the field. Again, we already have that
expense covered due to the generous contributions last year. At this
point, things are looking great for the county to continue supporting us
as we help them. Great teamwork thanks again for all your help in this
endeavor!

A New Monument to Honor Spokan Chief Garry
The Spokane Tribe of Indians, along with the Spokane Parks
Foundation, reached its goal this past August of
constructing a culturally appropriate monument to honor
Spokan Garry. The new monument is located in the northwest
corner of Chief Garry Park. Many coin drives, fundraisers
and community support helped build this amazing monument.
One of our biggest supporters was the Spokane Parks
Foundation. The grant dollars awarded to this project showed
how a community partnership can benefit a local
neighborhood, park visitors, and help educate a community
about a City Parks namesake; Chief Spokan Garry. On behalf
of the Spokane Tribe, Thank you! says Jamie Sijohn, Spokane
Tribe Community Relations Director, about the project.
And we at the Spokane Parks Foundation thank Jamie and the
Spokane Tribe for their support of the Spokane Parks
Foundation!

City of Millwood Wading Pool Project
The City of Millwood has maintained and operated the iconic wading pool
since its opening in 1954. Thanks to the Citys support, generations of
kids 7 and under have had a safe, free and supervised introduction to
water fun. The pool at Millwood City Park currently needs repair but the
citys tight budget cant stretch to cover the recommended recoating job.
The Millwood city council has created a separate park fund at the Spokane
Parks Foundation. If the public proves the pool is an important community
priority by raising the necessary repair money, the city has agreed to
budget operation and maintenance in the future.
I am excited that Spokane Parks Foundation is able to support our
fundraising for the Millwood Wading Pool. I am eager to get our cause
added to the Foundation's website and want to help in anyway I can. Thank
you for your help with our project, says Bobbie Beese, community activist
and owner of The Corner Door Fountain & Books. Check out the project's
website at
millwoodfriends.org for more information
about the fundraising, Millwood Wading Pool, the Park and some history.
Earlier in 2011, the Spokane Parks Foundation awarded the City of Millwood
a grant of $8,700 to replace a dangerously deteriorated wooden play
structure with new, safer playground equipment. Donations to repair the
Millwood Wading Pool can be made through the Spokane Parks Foundation,
either online at
SpokaneParksFoundation.org or send your
check, payable to Spokane Parks Foundation to PO Box 2021, Spokane, WA
99210. If paying by mail, be sure to write Millwood Wading Pool on the
check.

Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens Flourished in 2011!
The
historic Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens recently closed for
the season. Located in Edwidge Woldson Park at 507 West
Seventh Avenue, the Gardens are owned and operated by the
City of Spokane Parks & Recreation Department.
Visitors to the
Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens enjoyed the heritage plants as
they leaped this year. Planted during the 2007 restoration
work, over 200 varieties of heirloom plants, shrubs, trees,
and bulbs were selected for the site to return the historic
garden to the time it flourished between 1911 and 1914.
Visitors this year enjoyed spectacular displays of color
throughout the growing season. The display began in the
spring when over 2,000 bulbs opened along with an impressive
showcase of whites and purples as the lilacs, spirea,
candytuft, and catmint bloomed in late spring. Vintage roses
were blooming throughout the season in the Rose Garden and
at the Rose Arbor. The fall asters, phlox, and sedum opened
in September.
You dont want
to miss the Gardens in 2012 they will re-open in May.
Located west of the Corbin Art Center, the historic cultural
landscape and the D.C. Corbin House and Grounds are listed
on the local, state and national historic registers and are
situated in the Marycliff/Cliff Park National Register
Historic District. For additional information visit our

Polly Judd Park's New Shelter Proves to be Popular!
Claire Rudolf Murphy, neighbor of Polly Judd Park, sent us
the following note about the new picnic shelter at Polly
Judd Park. The new shelter has proven to be a boon to
visitors to Polly Judd Park since its completion last June.
Under the blazing sun this summer and drizzling rain or wind
this fall, young and old have appreciated the chance to get
out of the elements for picnics or to watch the kids play on
the equipment.
Walking by the new shelter this summer, sometimes I couldn't
help but inform people about the combined efforts of the
Cannon Historic Neighborhood Council, Spokane Parks
Foundation and the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department
to make this new shelter a reality. They always responded
with gratitude and friendliness, delightful with the
outcome. A big thanks to Pam Deutschman, who stayed the
course; and to all the people who donated to make it
happen."
