Dog Park Naming Celebration

Crowds of dog lovers rejoiced as Mayor Mary Verner handed the key to the city’s first dog park to SpokAnimal Executive Director, Gail Mackie on January 13th. “We’ve been needing it for years,” Verner said of the new park. “At this location, it takes an underutilized piece of property and puts it to good use.” The name of the city’s first free off-leash dog park was unveiled at the dedication – SpokAnimal’s Dog Park at High Bridge. SpokAnimal, a major donor to the park, has a three-year lease on the land with the city.

SpokAnimal secured donations to fence two separate areas of the park, one for large dogs and one for small ones. Fencing of the new park was completed by the end of January, and is ready for use. “It’s very important for the health and well-being of the dogs and owners in our community to have a safe place to go,” said Gail Mackie, SpokAnimal’s executive director.

Members of the Parks and Recreation Foundation, the Parks and Recreation Board, and SpokAnimal looked at several different areas before deciding on the site bordered by Riverside, Government Way and “A” Streets . More amenities are planned for the park as funding is secured. | Make a Donation

How the Power of Volunteers Saved
the Summer of 2010 For 2000 Kids

When community volunteers Connie Anderson-Michel and Rhonda Batchelor joined the Spokane Parks Foundation’s Marketing Committee to help with the swimsuit campaign - Operation: Save Our Summer (SOS), they knew the Foundation could only provide 200 swimsuits for area kids. They learned that there are almost 35,000 children in Spokane County who live below the poverty level (as cited by the Washington State Office of Financial Management). Thousands of low income children in our area could not afford swimsuits.

Connie and Rhonda went to work. Their initial idea was to aim high and find 5,000 new swimsuits for these kids but, considering the current economic climate, they found it necessary to revise their goal to 2,000. They put in countless hours per week writing and calling swimwear companies across the country. Connie had no prior grant writing experience. She worked in conjunction with Heleen Dewey of the Spokane County Regional Health District to identify regional poverty levels and using the research Rhonda had collected, applied for several grants.

The first hint of success came from Dolfin swimwear. When Dolfin became aware that Spokane area children needed swimsuits, they wanted to do something about it. Despite having no retailer in the region, they generously donated 830 swimsuits, valued at over $29,000! Speedo USA likewise responded quickly to the requests sending in suits from catalogue photo shoots valued at over $6,000. Suddenly the Foundation had over 900 swimsuits to give away.

Then the grant awards came: David & Dorothy Pierce Charitable Trust gave $3,000 - half for swimsuits and the other half for swim lessons; Avista Foundation contributed $1,000 and Kohl’s Northtown donated their employees’ time and an additional $1,500. The Foundation had $4,000 to buy more swimsuits…only enough for 200 more at retail prices. To reach their goal they still needed almost 900 swimsuits.

The power of these extraordinary volunteers and their ability to stretch the American dollar brought them to Nick Fjellstrom, Manager of the General Store. He understood the challenge and generously provided swimsuit sources. Connie was able to buy one liquidator’s remaining stock of 352 new suits at an average cost of $5 each. By the end of May 2010 they still needed 700 more swimsuits. Because the General Store had been so helpful, the Foundation returned to them with the remaining grant money to shop for the final “batch” of swimsuits. The General Store placed a special order on our behalf allowing us to purchase the remainder of the suits, and they even paid the shipping costs! The June deadline was met and 2100 kids in the greater Spokane area received brand-new swimsuits.

Community volunteers make powerful things happen. A special thanks to all who were involved with the Save Our Summer (SOS) Campaign: Erik Puthoff from Spokane City Credit Union leads customer donation drive at the bank; Marketing Committee Chair Bonnie Tapscott arranged to have a Public Service Announcement air at the Village Centre Cinemas (donated by Cinemedia). Stephanie Hermann and Kim Hagerty posted information on the social media networks. Volunteers from Boy Scouts and Women of LDS helped sort all of the swimsuits for distribution.

This year through the enormous help of the volunteers, the Spokane Parks Foundation was able to distribute over 2000 swimsuits to low income children through community centers in the greater Spokane area.

Together we make a big difference in the lives of Spokane area kids.

Will you help? A donation of any size counts! Make a Donation

2010 Historic Home and
Garden Tour on Sumner Avenue

Garden lovers and historic home aficionados swarmed Sumner Avenue one fine Saturday in September, getting their fix of beauty and history as they ooh’d and ah’d at the glories of five landmark properties: the historic Atwater-Ferris House built in 1910, the Charles & Maude Kemp House (1909), the Richard & Jessie Nuzum House (1914), the Walter & Grace Leuthold House (1925), and the Woldson Garden.

Ticket sales for the tour went to the Friends of the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens to buy plants, restore garden features, and maintain rockwork and trails, allowing the Gardens’ many friends in the community to enjoy five beautiful places while supporting another. An impressive feat, made to look effortless by the Friends group.

Once owned by prominent pioneers in the community – Washington Water Power president Frank Rockwood Moore and U.S. Senator George Turner -- the gardens on the property were begun by the Moores in 1889, with decades of extensive improvements under the Turners. After Turner died in 1932, as the Depression raged, the bank foreclosed on the mortgage. Finding no buyers, the house was eventually demolished in 1940, and the gardens were gradually reclaimed by nature, forgotten by the city that had once celebrated them.

Buried for 75 years, resurrection came about by accident – the gardens were rediscovered during the cleanup that followed the massive ice storm in 1996. After nine years of research, planning and restoration, the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens opened for all to enjoy in 2007. The Parks Foundation was one of many community organizations that helped fund the restoration, providing $75,000 in grants for several projects. Whether you are planning your first visit or make regular pilgrimages, the landmark gardens offer not just beauty, but a glimpse into Spokane’s past and some of the best views of the city anywhere.

The Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens are at 507 West Seventh Avenue in the Marycliff/Cliff Park Historic District and are open to the public from June through September. For more information, go to: www.mooreturnergardens.org

Northeast Youth Center
Thank You!

October 19, 2010

Spokane Parks Foundation
Attn: Toni Nersesian, Executive Director
P.O. Box 2021
315 W. Mission, Suite 26
Spokane, WA 99210-2021

Dear Toni,

The Northeast Youth Center was once again the proud recipient of $2,000 for partial Camp Scholarships for 12 children attending our Camp “Allotta Fun” this past summer.

Our camp offers the opportunity for campers to gain a wide exposure to different people in different walks of life. Most of our children come from diverse socio-economic classes, different backgrounds and different family structures. Therefore, the development of compassion and empathy for fellow human beings is a core social development area in our camp.

The Spokane Parks Foundation provided funds for children opportunities to share thoughts and feelings with other children. The influence of recreation on child development and personal growth is immense and should be experienced by all children. Your funds provided children the participation in a program that enhances social skills, self-identity and physical/ health.

Once again thanks for providing this funding again to our children!

Sincerely,

Karen Holmes, Director
Northeast Youth Center

Scholarship funds provided by the Spokane Parks Foundation this
summer provided scholarship funds that paid for summer camps, swim
lessons, day camps and theme camps at the Northeast Youth Center

Make A Splash

Remember those summers when you were just a kid? On those scorching hot days, nothing could beat jumping into the cool, refreshing water of your neighborhood pool and splashing around with your friends for hours on end. Unfortunately, so many children in Spokane are unable to enjoy such experiences because they cannot afford to pay the public pool entry fees. Make A Splash project raises funds to provide low-income youth access to pools in the greater Spokane area. However, it cannot be done without help. Since its launch, Make A Splash has grown tremendously as a result of the hard work of volunteers and the dedication of our compassionate community. Both individuals and groups are still needed to help raise funds and increase community awareness, and financial contributions are very helpful as well. With a donation of time or money, you can take the plunge and Make A Splash in a kid’s life!

If You Build it They Will Come

Spokane’s first universal playground was
dedicated this spring, to the acclaim of the
city’s children. A $25,000 grant from SPF helped make it happen. SPF grants couldn’t happen without YOUR donations.

What if you could build a playground that would allow all children to play together, regardless of physical ability or impairment? No impassable bark to trap wheelchairs well placed handrails to steady an uncertain gait, and a forgiving rubber surface underneath to cushion the occasional, inevitable tumble. In Spokane’s own Mission Park, there is just such a thing: a children’s universal playground.

Of course, it didn’t happen by magic or overnight. Not surprisingly, parents saw the need first and approached the Parks Dept. and Spokane Regional Health District for advice on the many important elements: from vans and wheelchairs, to the wide array of physical challenges they wanted to accommodate. And they wanted the kids to have slides and swings and a climbing wall, plus a music area with drums and bells. Oh, yes. Then there was the teensy matter of where to put it.

When it came time to raise funds, the Foundation was right there with a hefty grant of $25,000 to RotoAct (a group of young professionals and students, ages 18-35, interested in bettering our community), whose members immediately had seen its value as a community project. Working closely with SPF’s Grant Committee, they used the seed money from the Foundation to attract over $80,000 in donations from other groups and individuals over several years.

Finally, all the dreaming and the planning and the money-raising paid off when the dedication of Spokane’s first universal playground took place this May in Mission Park. Volunteers said a few words, the ribbon was cut, and then the kids came. Some came running, some came rolling. Some with imperfect strength, some with unsteady gait, but the community had built them a playground and they came. And they played.  |  Make a Donation
