The Spokane area is lucky to have a wonderful tradition of service groups and social clubs
working hard to support local nonprofits and make a positive impact in our community. The Suburbanites is one such group that has been raising money for local charities for over 50 years - beginning in 1959 sponsoring the Children’s Home Society. Made up of mostly Spokane Valley women, the Suburbanites hold yearly fundraising events, donating the proceeds to charities in Spokane Valley and North Idaho. They are specifically focused on organizations that help children. The Suburbanites have been a major donor to SPF’s Make A Splash in A Kid’s Life program for four years and we greatly appreciate their support and enthusiasm for helping area children have an active summer in our pools!
I recently sat down with the Suburbanites at their monthly meeting to get to know the ladies and thank them for contributing to Make A Splash. This is a warm, welcoming group of women who clearly have a passion for giving to the community and who have fun while doing it. As plans for their next fundraiser, a card party and luncheon on Oct. 6, took shape there was plenty of jokes and camaraderie between the close-knit group. When asked what her favorite event has been over the years, Suburbanites’ president Joanne Boyer told me that every event was memorable – they always have great participation! Many thanks to the Suburbanites from the Spokane Parks Foundation for their support and community leadership!
