Letter from the Executive Director

What’s Making Me Happy Today…

Kids laughing while running or swinging.

Couples holding hands while going for a walk.

The standard images of what a park looks like evoke feelings of happiness. And now studies are showing that this is more than just hype and good marketing.

“Higher levels of neighborhood green space were associated with significantly lower levels of symptomology for depression, anxiety and stress, after controlling for a wide range of confounding factors.”*

To translate, the more park space a neighborhood has, the less likely the neighbors are to be depressed, anxious or stressed. Which means that each day when we are working to make parks stronger, we are working to make the community healthier.

And that's enough to make me happy!

I love coming to work each day knowing that my time will be spent working to make Spokane an even better place to live and talking with folks like you who have joined us in our efforts.

On behalf of the thousands and thousands of people who have already used the parks this year and become healthier and happier as a result – thank you!
