Spokane Parks Foundation Celebrates $25,000 Walmart Foundation Grant

on Giving Tuesday

Grant provides 35-percent of funding for the Make A Splash In A Kid’s Life, making it possible for at least one pool to host Free Swim Fridays every week during summer vacation.

SPOKANE, Wash. (Dec. 2, 2015)—Today, Spokane Parks Foundation is celebrating a $25,000 grant from the

Walmart Foundation as part of its Giving Tuesday events. The grant will support the organization’s 2016 Make A Splash In A Kid’s Life program.

“The Spokane Parks Foundation is thrilled to receive this award from the Walmart Foundation,” said Heather Beebe-Stevens, Spokane Parks Foundation executive director. “The $25,000 will allow us to expand our Make A Splash In A Kid’s Life even further, something that would simply not be possible without the Walmart Foundation’s investment in our community.”

The Parks Foundation estimates that this recent grant will provide 35-percent of funding needed for the Make a Splash program. It intends to use the funding to implement Free Swim Fridays every single week this summer—compared to just one week last year—giving residents access to at least one pool in Spokane County each week that they can access for free swimming.

“At Walmart, we’re committed to helping our neighbors live better,” said Kyle Windhorn Walmart’s regional market manager over the Spokane-area.“ The Parks Foundation does a tremendous job connecting area citizens with our parks, and in ways that help us all gain a better appreciation of our community. On behalf of my team, congratulations on this award and we look forward to hearing about the great success of the Free Swim Fridays program.”

The Make A Splash In A Kid’s Life program launched seven years ago to increase access to community pools in Spokane County. It provides pool passes to low-income children throughout the area, as well as distributes swimsuits and offers free swim lessons to residents.

Since 2012, the Parks Foundation has provided 9,430 pool passes, distributed 4,793 swimsuits and funded 1,190 swim lessons.
