Safe Routes to Safe Parks

The Surgeon General recently issued a call to Americans to get out and walk. The National Recreation and Park Association has answered the call by pushing parks as an optimal walking environment.

But as part of that, they also realized that too many of us lack easy and safe access to GET to those parks for a walk. They have asked that as cities undertake road construction, sidewalk repairs or even sewer replacement to keep in mind that in order for Americans to get to parks to get healthy, we need to get there safely.

A couple of years back the City of Spokane added in extra crosswalks near a few key parks with flags to signal drivers as pedestrians crossed the road. What work has been done in your neighborhood to make your routes to parks safer?
